If you're planning a move in London, the first question you'll ask is simple: how much is this actually going to cost me? The honest answer — between £100 and £600 for most local moves — depends on a handful of straightforward factors. As a working London removal company based in Chiswick W4, we've handled over a thousand moves across the capital since 2015, and we'll break down exactly what you should expect to pay in 2026, what drives the cost up or down, and how to avoid the hidden fees that catch most people out.

Quick answer: In London in 2026, expect to pay £50/hr for 1 man and a van and £65/hr for 2 men and a van, with a 2-hour minimum. At those rates a studio move works out at £100–£150, a 1-bed at roughly £195–£260 and a 2-bed at £260–£390. Add £18 only if your move actually enters the Congestion Charge zone — which is a much smaller area than most people assume.

Last checked and updated 2 August 2026. Council permit fees and the Congestion Charge below are taken from the councils' and TfL's own published figures.

2026 Man and Van Prices in London — The Real Numbers

Hiring a man with a van in London is priced by the hour almost everywhere, and the hourly figure is the easy part. Here are typical 2026 rates across London. These are honest market prices — what reputable companies actually charge, not the suspiciously cheap quotes you'll see from cowboys who'll hit you with hidden fees on the day.

Single items, studio flats
1 Man + Medium Van

How Long Does a Typical London Move Take?

The size of your home is the biggest factor. Here's what we see across hundreds of moves every year:

Every figure above is our own hourly rate multiplied by the hours — no rounding, no padding. You can check the arithmetic yourself, which is rather the point. Note these are our prices; the market table above shows what the wider London range looks like, and most firms sit above us.

These times assume reasonable access — ground floor or with a lift, parking within 20 metres of the door, no abnormally heavy items. If you're on the fourth floor of a Victorian walk-up with no lift, add 30-60 minutes per bedroom.

What Drives the Price Up?

1. Access Difficulty

Stairs slow things down significantly. A 1-bed flat that takes 3 hours on the ground floor can take 5 hours from a third-floor walk-up. Long carries (more than 30 metres from van to door) also add time. If you live in a Victorian conversion with no lift, factor this in.

2. Parking Restrictions

Most London streets are inside a Controlled Parking Zone, and if you want a bay reserved outside your door you need a suspension from the council. Two things about these are widely misreported. First, the standard notice period is 10 working days in most boroughs, not five — short-notice tiers exist but cost substantially more and are not guaranteed. Second, the real cost is higher than the £30–£80 figure you will see quoted around the web, mainly because most boroughs charge a separate admin or booking fee on top of the daily bay rate. Here is what one bay for one day actually costs across four boroughs we work in constantly, taken from the councils' own published fees:

Borough
One bay, one day
Standard notice
Hounslow (Chiswick, Brentford, Isleworth)
£65
10 working days
Kensington & Chelsea
£82
10 working days
Wandsworth (Battersea, Putney, Tooting)
£125.60
10 working days
Lambeth (Clapham, Streatham, Brixton)
£156.38
10+ working days

So the honest range is roughly £65 to £160 for a single day, and the gap between boroughs is mostly admin fees rather than the bay itself: Hounslow adds £40, Wandsworth £82.20, Lambeth £98.83, while Kensington & Chelsea charges none but has the highest daily rate. Leave it late and it gets worse — RBKC's five-working-day express application adds £408 on top, and Lambeth's 2–5 day express tier adds £156.31.

Three ways to spend less here. If your street has no bays outside the door, ask about a yellow line waiver instead of a bay suspension — Hounslow charges £65 for the first day, and it is often the only workable option on a road with double yellows. If you are moving in the morning, Lambeth sells a half-day suspension covering midnight to midday at £34.57, which fits an 8am start comfortably. And in Kensington & Chelsea, check whether you need one at all: RBKC's published guidance states you do not have to suspend a bay to carry out a domestic removal, provided loading is continuous and you cause no obstruction.

One practical point: the application is made by you, not by your removal company. Councils issue suspensions against the property address and the vehicle registration, so it has to come from the occupier. Send us the reg and we will make sure the right van is named on it. Failing to arrange anything is not automatically a disaster — it just means the team may park further away, and the walk is billable.

3. Congestion Charge & ULEZ

If your move crosses into the Congestion Charge zone, that is £18 per day as of 2 January 2026 — up from £15, and the first rise since 2020. The hours changed too, and this is the part that catches people: it runs 07:00–18:00 Monday to Friday and 12:00–18:00 on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays. A Saturday afternoon move into Zone 1 is chargeable; the same move finishing before noon is not. It is also billed per calendar day, so a job running past midnight counts twice.

The zone is smaller than most people assume. It covers roughly the area inside the Inner Ring Road — Marylebone Road and Euston Road in the north, Tower Bridge Road in the east, Elephant and Castle and Kennington Lane in the south, Park Lane and Edgware Road in the west. Chelsea, Kensington, Notting Hill and Fulham are all outside it, despite feeling central; the Western Extension that once covered them was scrapped in January 2011. Southwark and Elephant and Castle, on the other hand, are inside it even though they are south of the river. If a company adds a Congestion Charge to a Chelsea or Fulham move, question it.

ULEZ is separate and covers every London borough at £12.50 a day for non-compliant vehicles. All our vans are ULEZ-compliant so that never reaches your invoice — but always check the company's vans before booking, because a non-compliant van in central London on a weekday means both charges, £30.50 in total.

4. Weekends and Month-End

Saturday is the most expensive day to move. Most tenancies end on the last day of the month, so the final weekend of every month sees premium pricing across London. If you can move midweek and mid-month, you'll save 10-20%.

5. Distance

Within central London, distance matters less than traffic. A 3-mile move from Chiswick to Hammersmith and a 5-mile move from Chiswick to Acton can take roughly the same time. For moves outside London (Kent, Surrey, Essex), expect to pay mileage on top of the hourly rate, or get a fixed quote.

Hidden Fees to Watch Out For

This is where cowboy operators catch you out. Always ask for an all-inclusive quote in writing before booking. Common hidden fees to watch for:

Red flag: If a quote seems too good to be true — like £25/hr for a single mover — it usually is. The company will either show up with the wrong size van and refuse to do the job, or hit you with hundreds in surprise fees on the day. A professional London man and van service costs £50/hr minimum in 2026.

How to Save Money on Your London Move

1. Book midweek if you can

Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday are 10-20% cheaper than weekends. If your tenancy is flexible, move on a weekday.

2. Pack everything yourself before the team arrives

This is the single biggest time-saver. Have every box taped, labelled and stacked near the door before the van arrives. Don't leave packing for the morning of the move. If you need help packing, book a packing service the day before — it's much cheaper than paying movers to pack on the move day at their full hourly rate.

3. Disassemble furniture in advance

Beds, wardrobes, dining tables — if you can take them apart the night before, you save the movers 30-60 minutes. Keep the screws in labelled bags taped to each piece.

4. Book the right size van first time

An undersized van means a second trip, which can double your bill. As a rough guide: a studio flat fits in a SWB (short wheelbase) Transit. A 1-bed flat needs a LWB Transit. A 2-bed flat or larger needs a Luton van.

5. Arrange parking suspensions early

If your street is in a CPZ, apply through your council's website at least 10 working days in advance — that is the standard notice period in most boroughs, and the short-notice tiers cost considerably more. Half an hour of two movers hunting for a space costs you more than the permit does.

6. Avoid month-end dates

The 28th-31st of every month is the most expensive time to move in London because tenancies typically end then. If you can move on the 5th or the 15th, you'll save money.

Is a Man and Van Cheaper Than a Removal Company?

For most London moves under 3 bedrooms, yes — a man and van is typically 30-50% cheaper than a traditional full-service removal company. The trade-offs:

At London Moverz, we offer both. Most of our customers choose the man and van service because it's faster, cheaper, and gets the job done. For larger homes we provide a full house removal service with 2-3 men and a Luton van, still at hourly rates without the bloated overheads of national removal franchises.

Single Item Delivery — How Much Does It Cost?

For one-off jobs like collecting a sofa from Facebook Marketplace, an IKEA pickup, or moving a single piece of furniture across London, expect to pay £60-£120 total. Most companies have a 2-hour minimum, so you'll pay £100-£130 even if the job takes 45 minutes. View our furniture delivery service for fixed-price single-item rates.

How Far in Advance Should I Book?

For weekend moves at month-end, book at least 2-3 weeks ahead. For weekday moves mid-month, 3-5 days notice is usually enough. We accept same-day bookings when slots are available, but availability is limited. The earlier you book, the more likely you'll get your preferred time slot.

FAQs — Man and Van Cost London

How much does a man and van cost per hour in London?

In 2026, expect £50/hr for 1 man + van and £65/hr for 2 men + van in London. Most companies have a 2-hour minimum booking. Central London moves and weekends typically cost more.

How long does a typical London move take?

A studio flat move usually takes 2-3 hours. A 1-bed flat takes 3-4 hours. A 2-bed flat takes 4-6 hours. A 3-bed house typically takes 6-8 hours. Stairs, parking distance and traffic can add 30-60 minutes.

What hidden fees should I watch out for?

Common hidden fees include congestion charge, ULEZ charge, fuel surcharges, stair fees, parking fees, weekend premiums, and minimum trip charges. Always ask for an all-inclusive quote in writing before booking.

Is it cheaper to hire a man and van or a removal company?

For small moves under 3-bedrooms, a man and van is usually 30-50% cheaper than a traditional removal company. For larger homes with valuable items, a full removal company offers more insurance coverage and equipment.

How can I save money on a London man and van?

Book midweek instead of weekends. Avoid month-end dates. Pack everything yourself before they arrive. Disassemble furniture in advance. Book the right size van first time. Arrange parking suspensions early to avoid delays.

Do you charge for parking suspension permits?

No. Councils issue suspensions against the property address and the vehicle registration, so the application has to come from you as the occupier — we cannot make it on your behalf. Expect £65 to £160 for one bay for one day depending on the borough, and apply at least 10 working days ahead. Tell us what you have arranged and send us nothing more than that; we will make sure the correct van registration is on the booking.

Do I need to be insured for my move?

A reputable London man and van service should have public liability insurance and goods in transit insurance included. Always ask to see the certificate before booking. London Moverz is fully insured up to £25,000 goods in transit and £2 million public liability.
