Piano Moving London

Your Piano, Moved Safely

A piano is one of the heaviest, most awkward and most valuable items in any home. An upright piano typically weighs between 150kg and 300kg and has a high centre of gravity. A baby grand, once the legs are removed, is a large, heavy, oddly-shaped object that requires careful planning to navigate through a standard Victorian London house. And all of this needs to happen without damaging the instrument, the walls, the floors or anyone on the team.

London Moverz moves pianos regularly across West and South West London. We use piano skids, heavy-duty piano boards and four-man teams for grand pianos. For upright pianos on ground floor to ground floor moves, a well-equipped two-man team with a piano dolly is usually sufficient. We assess every job individually before quoting, because no two piano moves are identical — the access at each end, the number of steps, the type of piano and the presence of a lift all affect the approach.

We do not subcontract piano moves to third parties. The team that comes to your home is our own. We wrap the piano fully in moving blankets before it leaves the room. We remove legs from grand pianos and secure the lid. We use piano dollies and skids on every move, never rollers alone. We place protective floor covering on wooden floors and stairs before the piano is moved. And we provide a fixed price rather than an hourly rate for piano moves, so you know exactly what you are paying.

What to Expect

How We Move Your Piano

01
Site assessment
We ask for photos or a short video of the piano's location, the exit route and the stairs at both ends. For grand pianos, we may carry out a site visit. This lets us quote accurately and arrive prepared.
02
Preparation and protection
We lay floor protection before touching the piano. We fully wrap the piano in moving blankets secured with stretch wrap. For grands, we remove the legs and lid and wrap each piece separately.
03
Moving the instrument
Using piano skids, boards and dollies, we navigate the piano out of the room, down any stairs and into the van. Every step is planned in advance. Nothing is rushed.
04
Delivery and placement
At the destination, we reverse the process — the piano is carried to its final position, floor protection is laid, legs are reattached for grands, and the instrument is left exactly where you want it.

Questions

Piano Moving FAQs

Piano moving prices in London vary significantly based on the type of piano, the access at both ends and the distance involved. An upright piano on ground-floor-to-ground-floor with easy access typically costs £150 to £250. An upright with stairs at either end is higher. A baby grand or full grand piano with leg removal and a specialist team typically starts at £300 and increases with access difficulty. We provide fixed quotes for all piano moves — not hourly rates — so you know exactly what to budget.

For most upright piano moves, photos and measurements are sufficient to quote. We will ask you to send photos of the piano's current location, the exit route (doorways, corridors), any stairs and the destination room. For grand pianos or particularly complex access situations — very narrow Victorian staircases, unusual floor layouts — we may recommend a site visit before confirming the price.

Yes — even a carefully executed piano move will almost always cause some detuning. Pianos are sensitive to changes in temperature, humidity and physical movement. You should expect to have your piano tuned after any move, and again after it has acclimatised to its new environment (usually 2 to 4 weeks later). We are happy to recommend a piano tuner in your area on request.

Yes. We move pianos up and down stairs regularly across London — including the narrow, steep Victorian staircases common in Chiswick, Fulham, Putney and Kensington. For upright pianos on stairs, we use a four-point carry with a piano skid and at least three crew members. For grand pianos, we assess the staircase dimensions in advance and may use a specialist piano board for flights above the ground floor. Stair moves take longer and require more crew, which is reflected in the quote — but we never attempt a stair move unless we are confident it can be completed safely.

We move all types: upright pianos (from compact modern uprights to full-size 150cm models), baby grand pianos, full grand pianos and concert grands. We also handle digital stage pianos and keyboard rigs with flight cases. The approach differs for each — an upright can usually be moved by two experienced crew with a piano dolly, while a baby grand requires leg removal, specialist wrapping, a piano board and a minimum four-person team.

We do not operate our own storage facility, but we regularly deliver pianos to climate-controlled storage units across West London and can recommend storage providers who specialise in musical instruments. Pianos should ideally be stored in temperature- and humidity-controlled environments. We can collect from storage and deliver to a new address when you are ready.

We recommend booking at least one week in advance for upright piano moves and two weeks for grand pianos. Grand piano moves may require a site visit and additional crew, so earlier booking ensures we can schedule the right team. That said, we do accommodate shorter-notice requests when possible — call or WhatsApp and we will do our best.

Yes. We carry full goods-in-transit insurance and public liability insurance. Pianos are high-value items and we treat every piano move with the care that requires. We are happy to provide a Certificate of Insurance on request before the move date, which is often required by building management companies in London apartment blocks.
